The Purpose of Human Life ? – Four Observations on “LIFE”
Observation 1. A Creator behind every creation
In life, whenever we see a beautiful thing, we are prompted to ask, “Who made it? What is its purpose? This is because we know there is a purpose behind every creation.
Let us take a look at the man. Man’s heart pumps 1,00,000 times a day. The total length of the blood vessels in the human body is estimated to be about 60,000 Km according to a recent report, and it is enough to span the earth along the equator and more.
The human body is made up of millions of cells and each cell performs over 300 chemical reactions with high precision without our efforts.
What a marvelous creation?
Now atheists may say “Well, these are all the developments that took place in nature by itself”. This is like saying that this article you are reading now has come into existence by the arrangement of 26 alphabets on a plain paper, without anybody’s help.
We therefore conclude, that there is a creator behind the creation of this Universe.
Observation 2. The Creator relates with his creation naturally.
An author cherishes his book.
A scientist cherishes his invention.
An artist relates to his paintings.
But there is no natural relationship between God and man, not even during his infancy, a period of total innocence and purity.
Why?
There could be a broken relationship between man and God.
In other words, man is born into this world and destined for condemnation. Anything a person does not keep a relationship is condemned and thrown away. This is the condition of man. After his life on earth he lands in an abyss. This belief is prevalent in almost all cultures. In Indian culture we call it pathalam, a place where all souls are lodged till the judgment day.
Is there any proof for this?

Observation 3. An owner searches for his lost valuables.
If there is a broken relationship between the Creator and man, who can restore the relationship?
In real life experience, we see that it is the owner who will always search for his lost articles or valuables.
If someone loses his dog, he will not wait for the dog to return home by itself. He will go out and search for it. The pet-like dog belongs to the class Mammalia and man also belongs to the same class. Though a dog and a man belong to the same class, we know that a dog is inferior to man in intelligence and requires man’s help to find its way to the owner. If this logic is true for man and his dog, which belong to a common class, how can we think that a finite man can find an infinite God?
In other words, only God can restore the broken relationship with man.
Observation 4. When plants, animals and forests are destroyed, something happens – the local ecosystem gets affected.
Does anything happen when a man dies?
Is there anything that depends on human life on this earth?
No. Nothing happens.
If that is the case:
Is there a fundamental purpose of human life?
In this context, without any prejudice, let us turn to the Bible, the compiled work of 40 authors. Incidentally, all authors lived in different times and places and the books were written over a span of 1500 years. Yet there is absolutely no contradiction between any of the books. It was only possible by the guidance of the Supernatural Power of God (Holy Spirit) working in these authors.
Let us see what it says about man.
“God created the heaven and the earth”(Genesis 1:1)
“So (He) created man in his image” (Genesis 1:27)
Man was created as a spiritual being for fellowship with God.
However, our first parents committed sin (Genesis 3:6) by breaking God’s commandment (Genesis.2:17).
“Thus, through the disobedience of one man, sin entered into the world” (Romans. 5:12).
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans.3:23).
This is the condition of man. He is separated from a holy and just God.
God takes the initiative to redeem the lost man.
God is holy and just. He has declared that there is no remission of sin without the shedding of blood. So, without overlooking His attributes and conditions, God made a plan to redeem the world. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
God sent his son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for the redemption of man. He was buried and on the third day God raised him from the grave. Through his resurrection, death was defeated. “For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.” (Romans. 5:19).
What is expected from man for his redemption?
Just like a lost pet or animal submits to its master, man has to accept Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour and submit himself to God. “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved…”(Acts.16:31). “…whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved…” (Acts. 2:21) Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6).
What is the fundamental purpose of human life in nature?
All living things have a role or niche to perform in nature.
Plants manufacture food using sunlight. Animals feed on plants directly or indirectly. Small animals become food for the larger animals. If animals and plants are destroyed in a local area, life in that area gets affected. When man dies, nothing affects nature. No wonder a man who once had achieved everything in life said, “Vanity of vanities; all is vanity” (Eccl 1:2). These were the words of none other than King Solomon. His thesis starts with the above words and ends this way.
“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter. Fear God, and keep His commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil” (Eccl.12:13-14).
To conclude, man is a spiritual being and his fundamental purpose is a spiritual one; to fellowship with God. Nothing else will ever satisfy him in the long run. Though man is in a lost state, God wants him to repent and believe in His son, Jesus Christ, who was given as a ransom for man’s sin. He wants you to have eternal life and fellowship with Him. He wants you to worship Him in Spirit and truth, the prime purpose for which you and I were created.
It is not a religion and I personally advise you to stay away from religious entanglements.
It is a relationship between you and God. After all, there are only three basic entities in this whole Universe as far as an individual is concerned. It is God, evil and the individual. All others are either God’s or Satan’s agents and the latter are secondary. Whatever your background may be, you can establish a relationship with your Creator through His redemption plan. May God bless you to fulfill this purpose in your life.
